De laatste dag op Okinawa, een guided tour rond het zuidelijke deel van het eiland. Nu ben ik al voor de zevende keer in Japan en eindelijk moest ik er ook aan geloven. Robert achter een gids aan, zij gekleed in een keurig pakje, de vlag hoog geheven en alle toeristen er in rijen achter aan. Voor een dag is dat prima te doen, maar ik zou dit voor geen goud willen gedurende twee weken die de gemiddelde Japan reis duurt georganiseerd door een ahem.. professioneel reisbureau.
Shuri-castle is tijdens de slag om Okinawa compleet aan splinters geschoten dus het kasteel wat er nu staat is een replica, maar met een groot verschil met meeste andere. Men heeft het zoveel mogelijk herbouwd in orginele staat en daarom mag het zichzelf werelderfgoed noemen. Verder is best wel de Chinese en Taiwanese invloed te zien, tot 1870 was Okinawa en de omliggende eilanden ook nog een gewoon koninkrijk dat door Japan min of meer op niet al te zachtzinnige wijze is ingelijfd.
De volgende locatie die bezocht werd was een verzameling met allerlei ambachten, tropische tuinen en dergelijke, en een druipsteen grot. En die was adembenemend. Een veel groter als het op het eerste gezicht leek.
Het volgende programma punt is een war-memorial. Tuurlijk heeft de bevolking enorm geleden, maar wat pijnlijker is dat zeker tot en met de oorlog de Japanners de originele bewoners van Okinawa als tweede rangs zagen, burgers zitten altijd in de puree als er een oorlog uitbreekt, en in dit geval was het niet veel beter, eerder slechter. Veel burgers hebben tijdens de slag om Okinawa zelfmoord gepleeg om niet in handen van de Amerikanen te vallen, we weten nu wel beter, zelfmoord was vaak gewoon moord.
De glasblazerij die daarna kwam was niet zo heel erg bijster interessant, ja het is wel interessant, maar voor een glasblazerij hoef je eigenlijk niet naar Japan, ja toch, niet dan!
De Sake brouwerij is natuurlijk heel interessant, errug lekker om te proeven ook. Alleen sommige smaakte toch wel wat ranzig, wat op zich weer niet zo vreemd is. De Higa brouwerij verkoopt namelijk ook azijn, die bekend staat als de "Dry unsweetend Masahiro Moromi Vinegar". Tijd om terug te gaan naar het vliegveld voor de terugreis naar Tokyo.
Grappig maar het voelt alsof de vakantie er al een beetje opzit totdat je bedenkt dat je nog twee en halve week te goed hebt. Okinawa is leuk, een prima eiland dat veel te bieden heeft zowel cultureel verantwoord als gewoon domweg fun. En dan moet je bedenken dat we nog moet eiland hoppen, er zijn namelijk nog wel wat kleinere echt tropische verassings eilandjes in de buurt, ik kan nog koraal gaan bekijken, je kan nog snorkelen of duiken tussen de tropische vissen enz. enz.
Yep, Okinawa is beslist wel de moeite waard, dat kan ik wel stellen na drie dagen. |
